FJAR Lab launches new newsletter!

The Food & Social Justice Action Research Lab (FJAR Lab) has launched a new newsletter!

The FJAR Lab aims to contribute to racial and economic justice in the food system through critical and participatory action research – in New York City and State, nationally and internationally. Founded in 2022 by director Dr. Kristin Reynolds, Chair and Associate Professor of Food Studies at The New School, we work for a dignified food system for all.

While not necessarily intended as such, the acronym for the Lab’s name, ‘FJAR,’ has reminded some of our members of the Arabic word ‘fajr:’ the first light of dawn. We appreciate this inspiration as it compels us to think about how work for social justice in the food system is ongoing – a perpetual dawn which reinvigorates our hope.

The FJAR Lab is inaugurating this newsletter to share about our work with a broader public.

(Until now, updates about the FJAR Lab have been included in the newsletter of the Food Studies degree Program at The New School, which is being “indefinitely discontinued” as of Fall 2026, though current Food Studies majors will still be able to complete their degree.)

The FJAR Lab Newsletter will be published 2-3 times per year. We hope that readers will find interest and inspiration through it. We also hope that this newsletter can serve as a seeding ground for collaborations for food and environmental justice in ever-changing social and political contexts.

This first issue introduces Lab members’ collective work: A sample of member projects, our recent and upcoming public events, a community organization spotlight, and our first (of hopefully many!) Lab member-curated playlist.
